Oryx and Crake (6 points)

When reading another one of Margert Atwood, I noticed that her books relate a lot to natural disasters. It seems to look like that she focuses on not just gender as a topic, but the environment. Her books show that the environment should be taken care of. In this book, it takes place after a post-apocalyptic event that happens, although there are moments of the present day.

I was also interested in how the author describes the dangers behind corporate power. In this world, corporations re-configured where people should live. In fact, later on corporations become like gated communities, a universe that is surrounded by the dystopian world Atwood creates. Also, corporate greed is what causes an apocalyptic world to go in the future.

Interesting enough the book is also about the dangers of technology. Much of the technology that is described tells that the advancements lead to problems down the line. For example, the book involves transgenics, people who do not know I will explain. It is the DNA of transferring into another species. Now when transferring that into a human, even if it is just a kidney like the book suggests. It is possible that it could cause further harm to the species, either new mutated species is formed. Another possibility is that the host of the new DNA could die, from not having the same DNA.

Also, I really enjoyed reading the before and after events of the world. It was just so fascinating to see the buildup, to such events that took place. The books show Snowman’s past and present day, the main character of the book. He explains the genetic implication of such actions. The Children Of Crake are genetically different from ordinary humans.

In conclusion, I like reading Margert Atwood's books. She is a one of a kind author that has helped in new developments of dystopian novels. Including, bringing light to social issues, that still exist today. Although a difference being between The Handmaid and this, is that this is more related to corporations and technology. While The Handmaid is more about gender inequality. To sum up my thoughts, she is a wonderful author who brings to light about issues that have helped and shown it’s dangers.
