Oryx and Crake (6 points)

When reading another one of Margert Atwood, I noticed that her books relate a lot to natural disasters. It seems to look like that she focuses on not just gender as a topic, but the environment. Her books show that the environment should be taken care of. In this book, it takes place after a post-apocalyptic event that happens, although there are moments of the present day.  I was also interested in how the author describes the dangers behind corporate power. In this world, corporations re-configured where people should live. In fact, later on corporations become like gated communities, a universe that is surrounded by the dystopian world Atwood creates. Also, corporate greed is what causes an apocalyptic world to go in the future.  Interesting enough the book is also about the dangers of technology. Much of the technology that is described tells that the advancements lead to problems down the line. For example, the book involves transgenics, people who do not know I will explain. It

The Handmaid's Tale (5 points)

The Handmaid’s Tale is a dystopian future as women are subjugated and are slaves in this universe. Many of the women are forced to reproduce children. People who disagree with the government are killed on the spot. When reading the setting and tone, it tells of a society where women are subjugated, like not allowed to read or write. In most dystopias futures, world is full of totalitarianism. An example is the book 1984. As I kept on reading the book by Marget Adwood, I realized the tone is very bleak and desolate. When the United States collapses, Gilead takes over as the government and it shows the dangers of this. The book is also a work of feminism, as it tries to explain what could happen if people are not given rights. The show and the book are very different. While the show takes place in modern day society. In the book, it takes place in the 1980’s. Although the same government and plot happens in the book. Handmaid’s tale has a world where newspapers and the press are censor

Bloodchild (2 points)

I was stunned when reading this. I was horrified by the events that happened in the book. For example, alien creatures that do not look normal. It felt like the short story was filled with terrifying moments like this one. I also was very conflicted about the themes related to the short story. Almost like I was dealing with the consequences that happened in the book, like how you make choices in an RPG video game. As well as being creeped out that males are impregnated with a baby.  A connection I was able to make with the book Handmaid's Tale. In that book, surrogate reproduction happens a lot because society has diminished in population; Bloodchild shows how an alien species cannot have children of their own. They help from the human species. The elements I was able to connections is with sex roles in the book. The main character has to carry an alien baby. I noticed that the author puts a feminist's role into the work.  In this short story, the author challenges the femini

Snow Crash (6 points)

I have read a lot of cyberpunk books. However, Snow Chase had to be my favorite Cyberpunk book to read. It starts in the year 2021 in Los Angeles; a world economic collapse has happened over. From the economic collapse, Los Angeles has been separated from the rest of the United States Of America. In the dystopian future, big business is a major force in this universe.  The character in Snow Chase works for the Mafia as a pizza delivery driver. It is almost as if the plot is complex. However, most of the Cyberpunk books you could read would be weird for those who hadn’t read before. When reading this book, technology is all over the place. I find that some of the characters are hackers, something very common in Cyberpunk universes. Further, evaluation in the book explains that unemployment is rampant. I mean if a huge economic collapse happened, then no wonder it is so known. The city streets are shown with this kind of unemployment rate. I could tell that this is a Cyberpunk book becau

Babel 17 (5 points)

Babel 17 is a story that tells of interstellar war and one of those sides develops a new language that can be used on a weapon. I found myself feeling as if there was a lot of philosophy in the book. I realized I had to keep on thinking deeper, turning every corner. It was so fascinating that this took place in the future and had all these philosophical elements in the book. The main philosophy is how language develops the perception of people. It also deals with the effects of language on people. So I started to understand that language could act like a parasite. The reasons why the language is considered a weapon. As well as well creating drastic effects on the human mind. I also enjoyed learning about who the characters are. Ryda Wong is a captain on a starship. She is the main character of the book. It is most interesting that she is telepath and a poet as well. I find that just fascinating it takes place in space, although the elements of major themes play out. Furthermore, govern
