Bloodchild (2 points)

I was stunned when reading this. I was horrified by the events that happened in the book. For example, alien creatures that do not look normal. It felt like the short story was filled with terrifying moments like this one. I also was very conflicted about the themes related to the short story. Almost like I was dealing with the consequences that happened in the book, like how you make choices in an RPG video game. As well as being creeped out that males are impregnated with a baby.

A connection I was able to make with the book Handmaid's Tale. In that book, surrogate reproduction happens a lot because society has diminished in population; Bloodchild shows how an alien species cannot have children of their own. They help from the human species. The elements I was able to connections is with sex roles in the book. The main character has to carry an alien baby. I noticed that the author puts a feminist's role into the work.  In this short story, the author challenges the feminist ideal by reversing the sex because a male is impregnated instead.

The changes I would adapt is to make it more along the lines similar to the movie Parasite, where everyone in the movie is that. I would've wanted to see where no one is either good or bad. It is just how the world revolves around it, this would allow things to go into other mediums. A reason that it would be more in the present day, instead of the future. The medium I would choose is more of a drama story, as it would be more relatable. Some of the changes I would make is to get rid of the aliens and have this take place in modern society, with society having to reverse the gender role.

I would consider some of the elements to be afro-futuristic because of the gender and sexual orientation that happens in the book. As I have stated previously, sex roles are reversed in this book. In this future, it tries to show understanding of the present day; by reversing the roles of sex, the author tries to explain a feminist view on the matter. It is some of the elements I would consider as an afro-futuristic genre.

It did not reflect majoritarian culture. As I felt there were some things that do not reflect the values of it. The majority of democracy almost felt as if it did not exist. I always was thinking that aliens are the dominant of the world, even though one species has to depend on another. They are more politically powerful than the humans are. In this world politically, the aliens hold the majority over things, while humans do not.

In conclusion, I think that this book is one that takes an idea of consequences in a universe like this. As society has to confront an understanding between two species. Although, I can tell that there is an understanding and that peace exists between the two races. I think that the short story is best explained when the differences of these two races are realized.
